DVDs

It’s amazing what creative ideas you can find with a simple Google search.

Broken item? Google how to fix it.

Lots of empty toilet rolls? Google for some craft ideas.

Too many unwatched DVDs collecting dust? Google it!

So many ideas on how to reuse, repurpose and repair are available at the click of your fingers. Pinterest is great too!

This is what lead me to my latest DIY project; making my mum a Mother’s Day gift while using up a stack of old DVDs.

Mosaic coasters AND a matching tray!

Here’s a basic step-by-step guide how I made them (but you can find plenty of tutorials online if you want more details):

1. Separate the two layers of the DVD. I just pried them apart with pointy tweezers.
2. Cut the DVDs into pieces (sharp scissors help!).
3. Hot glue the pieces to whatever you’re mosaicing (is that even a word?) in jigsaw puzzle fashion. In this case I used old coasters and a wooden tray I picked up from an op shop.
4. Use grout to fill in the gaps.

Simple, right?

That’s what I thought too before I started on the wooden tray and then I realized it was going to take me a long time to finish it. That was the Friday night before Mother’s Day. Saturday afternoon saw me slapping on the grout and early Sunday morning I had time to quickly wipe it over. Job done!

And thankfully, Mum loves it! Happy dance!

I also found a creative way to use up some of the DVD cases too. Again, Google was my friend.

Have you found a DIY project you’d like to tackle? Or made something from repurposed materials? I have plenty of DVDs left over so I wonder what I can do next?!
